DGI-2

Business and support structures in the D-Grid

The beginning of 2008 saw the completion of D-Grid integration project 1 (DGI-1). This created a core grid infrastructure in Germany that could be utilised by the Community Grid Projects in existence at the time and which still form the basis for further Community Projects.

Thanks to DGI-1 and the special D-Grid investments financed by the BMBF between 2006 and 2008, it has been possible to create a considerable, widely distributed grid infrastructure in Germany. Within the framework of the DGI-2 follow-up project, this grid infrastructure will be put on a long-term, sustainably usable basis. A powerful project organisation consisting of twenty partners from the fields of science and industry is working to achieve this goal.

The content and structure of DGI-2, as with DGI-1 before it, are predominantly Community-driven. In addition, there was a great deal of communication with the Community Projects in the run up to the application. This produced four key focal points for DGI-2: support and operation of the core grid infrastructure, as well as security and data management. Although DGI-2 is an integration project like DGI-1 rather than a development project, some development measures are indispensable. These are combined to form an independent development project, representing the fifth focal point in DGI-2. Finally, great importance is attached to communicating with the Community Projects, particularly with regard to the sustainable business models stipulated by the BMBF. The scope of this represents the sixth focal point of DGI-2.

The entire DGI-2 project has been divided into the following six corresponding work packages which are described in detail thereafter:

Work package 1:
Support of Grid users and resource providers

Work package 2:
Operation of D-Grid infrastructure

Work package 3:
Security

Work package 4:
Management of data and information

Work package 5:
Development projects

Work package 6:
Sustainability and coordination
